This list contains the applications that will be automatically started when the system starts. Under Finder, a single application may be selected, which will be launched instead of the Finder. Under MultiFinder, multiple applications may be selected which will be launched in addition to the Finder.

Applications can be added with the Add… button, and removed with the Remove button. 

Applications in this list in no way limit the applications that may be run on your system. After the system starts, you may start and use applications as you always have; this simply allows you to specify, for an environment, which applications to initially start.
